SYDNEY EVENT

In early February, Grattan Institute will release the first of a two-part report on the technology choices that will frame Australia’s energy future. The report explores in detail the seven technologies that might enable Australia to achieve the targets set out in the Federal Government’s Clean Energy Legislation for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. It also considers the case for government intervention beyond the carbon tax and R&D support.

Andrew Charlton, a former senior economic adviser to Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, an Australian representative at the 2009 UN climate change conference in Copenhagen and the author of the November 2011 Quarterly Essay, Man Made World: Choosing between Progress and Planet, will discuss the conclusions and recommendations of the report with Tony Wood, Grattan’s Energy Program Director.

About the speakers

Andrew Charlton was senior economic adviser to the prime minister from 2008 to 2010. During that time he served as Australia’s senior official to the G20 summits and the prime minister’s representative to the Copenhagen Climate Conference. He previously worked for the London School of Economics, the United Nations and the Boston Consulting Group, and received his doctorate in economics from Oxford University, where he studied as a Rhodes Scholar. He is the author  of Ozonomics (2007) and Fair Trade for All (2005), co-written with Nobel laureate Joseph Stiglitz.
Tony Wood joined Grattan Institute in May 2010 after two and a half years as Program Director of Clean Energy Projects at the Clinton Foundation. Before that he spent 11 years working at Origin Energy, which included a secondment to the first Garnaut review. He has built widespread relationships within the energy sector and is seen as a trusted adviser by government.

Grattan Institute

Grattan Institute is based in Melbourne, Australia, and was launched in 2009 with strong support from both the private and public sectors. It aims to focus on the important rather than the urgent. The things that could make a difference to the well-being of Australians over the long run, not distracted by three year electoral cycles. Since launch, Grattan Institute has established a profile as a leader of independent analysis of Australian domestic public policy. It aims to influence both public discussion and senior decision-makers.
